Customize fresh Ubuntu installation

  • Install latest updates
  • Reboot
  • Remove Amazon, and 3 office apps from sidebar
  • Turn off the screen saver time-out, or set it to a more reasonable timeout (1 hour) 'System Settings' app -> 'Brightness & Lock' app
  • Since we're going to run various servers, give this host a fixed IP address, using the 'System Settings' app -> Options -> IPv4 Settings
  • Add 'Terminal' app to sidebar
  • Setup file sharing for Windows. See Samba setup
  • Using 'Ubuntu Software Center', install:
    • Geany
      A nice lightweight GUI based editor
    • vim
      The pre-installed vi version has some arrow key problems
      Create the file .vimrc and add these lines to disable color coding
      syntax off
      set nohlsearch
      set t_Co=0
    • Filezilla
      A nice FTP client
    • IDLE (3.4)
      A Python IDE for Python 3.2
    • IDLE (2.7) A Python IDE for Python 2.7
    • git
      A version control system
    • Minicom
      Serial comm program
    • Screen
      Serial comm program
    • Shutter
      A screen capture app
    • Kazam
      A screen capture app
    • Qemu
      Virtual Machine
    • Dropbox
      Cloud app
    • X11VNC server
      Remote desktop server
    • Wireshark
      Network monitor
      sudo dkpg-reconfigure wireshark-common
      sudo adduser paul wireshark

      Then logout and login again

  • Using 'apt-get', install:
    sudo apt-get install tree
    sudo apt-get install gksu
    sudo apt-get install openssh-client
    sudo apt-get install openssh-server
    sudo apt-get install php5 mysql-server apache2
    sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
    sudo apt-get install vsftpd
    sudo vi /etc/vsftpd.conf .. to set local_enable and write_enable
  • Download Chrome browser from Google and install
  • Set visudo editor to vi with
    sudo update-alternatives --config editor
